China Sees Wave of Elementary School Closures; More Than 70 Schools Shut Down in Quanzhou, Fujian
Elementary schools across various regions in China are facing closures and mergers. In Quanzhou, Fujian, over 70 elementary schools have been closed since last year. Similarly, elementary schools in first-tier cities like Shanghai and Guangdong are also affected. At the same time, teachers in various regions are being laid off or having their salaries reduced.
On August 29th, a parent visited Xing Chen Bilingual School in Shuozhou, Shanxi, only to find it completely deserted and closed.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the country's population has experienced consecutive years of negative growth. In 2022, the population decreased by 850,000 compared to 2021; in 2023, it decreased by 2,080,000 compared to 2022.
Analysts believe that the decline in the birth rate will lead to future issues with an aging population and a reduction in the workforce.
