The four Chinese characters in the memorial gateway read “Wu Dafu Pine”. Legend has it that when the First Emperor Qin Shi Huang(259 BC-210 BC,more than 2000 years ago)was on his way to the top of Mount Tai to hold his "FENGSHAN" ceremony to pay respect to heaven, terrifying heavy rain suddenly poured down. Luckily enough for the emperor, a giant pine nearby offered him much needed shelter. He was so grateful that he later conferred the pine an “Wu Dafu” title; and this pine thus became the first tree that ever enjoyed an official rank of nobility. “Wu Dafu” was one of the ranks given to senior officials in ancient China.
